Name changes for unclear pools

Posted under General

Went through the first 25 pages of pools and compiled the list below of pool names which might potentially be unclear. I tried to pretend to be as ignorant of internet culture as I could and flag as many as possible, so many of these are probably fine; discuss.

pool #2005 - "What do you mean, it's not awesome?"
pool #2887 - "Sugar & Spice"
pool #1636 - "Fund it!"
pool #1900 - "Do not want"
pool #1246 - "Nice Knowing You"
pool #1561 - "Told You Not To Do That"
pool #1888 - "Sean Connery is about to shoot you"
pool #2574 - "Save me..."
pool #1725 - "Enjoying this moment with you"
pool #591 - "Lipstick"
pool #1450 - "A Wretched Hive of Scum and Villainy"
pool #1753 - "I Am The King!"
pool #1048 - "It's dangerous to go alone! Take this."
pool #1908 - "What has science done?!?"
pool #1388 - "More Dakka!!"
pool #1350 - "Coaching"
pool #2486 - "It's a trap!"
pool #2403 - "Watch Your Language"
pool #1399 - "Thinking with Portals"
pool #2553 - "How is that even possible?"
pool #2246 - "You saw, didn't you!?"
pool #1340 - "Down & Out"
pool #1823 - "Wow, that was fast"
pool #2350 - "Dynamic Entry"
pool #2172 - "Okay, now tell me how you really feel."

I don't see why thematic pool names need to be a verbatim representation of their content. I think what they're about seems to stick more when the name is not initially obvious.

Additionally, pools with bare-bones descriptive names seem to be the target for conversion into tags, but then we might wind up with too many frivolous tags causing clutter.

The thing is, doesn't going into the pool and reading the pool description typically clear up the definition of the pool? I think giving dry and cut names for some of these pools wouldn't give appealing names...

"What do you mean, it's not awesome?" -> "Doing mundane activities in an over-the-top way"
"You saw, didn't you!?" -> "Girls angry at having their panties seen"
"More Dakka!!" -> "Excessively large weapons and ammo"
"I Am The King!" -> "Acting in a regal manner"

Or something like that. Just random thoughts off the top of my head.

I don't see how

"Nice Knowing you"
"Told you not to do that"
"Do Not want"
"Its a trap"
"Fund it"
"A Wretched Hive of Scum and Villainy"
and "It's dangerous to go alone! Take this."

Can be anyway more clearer. Most of them should have pretty good descriptions. In fact the title alone already tells you everything.

The others, I'm not so sure what to say since I don't see them as much.

I tried to pretend to be as ignorant of internet culture as I could and flag as many as possible

Well...thats no fun. You can always try to get a little more into it.

I think the appeal of thematic pools is that users can share groups of images with each other that are connected beyond a few tags. They could be substituted with tag subscriptions, but pools are much easier to search and modify. Having interesting names is just part of how people connect via pools.

In an ideal situation, there would be a separation of pools by type: publications, user created, and any other types I'm missing…
That would cut down on the feel of clutter at least.

Either that or tag_group:theme

Oh, I'm not arguing against pools and the names that currently exist. I'm just giving silly name examples that probably wouldn't work.

I think it's safe to say if they're on Danbooru and interested in anime or whatever images, they have some basic knowledge of the Internet and its environment. However, if people do voice their experiences to the contrary here, I would stand corrected.

Honestly, the only title that really personally bugs me is "Lipstick" (although several of them are just altogether pointless), but it was brought up in forum #55705 and I figured I'd make a list.

I think the name of the thread "Pointless Pools", while clear in its intent on order, doesn't capture the way pools should really be discussed. Something like "Pool Improvement" might be better. With the current thread name, I think people are more liable to think that some pools are pointless, rather than in need of work.

If all pools are good, how can it be clutter?

pool #2005 - Everyday things done in extraordinary ways.
pool #2887 - Honestly can't offhand put the concept to words.
pool #1636 - I would pay money to play that.
pool #1900 - N/A is it worth keeping?
pool #1246 - Death is imminent
pool #1561 - Seems clear enough.
pool #1888 - Character aiming a gun at the viewer.
pool #2574 - Can't think of anything but it needs to be more clear for sure.
pool #1725 - Hmm there is a word that fits but I can't think of it atm.
pool #591 - Dark inner labia
pool #1450 - Groups of villains
pool #1753 - Royal stature? I got nothing.
pool #1048 - Meme from start to finish. I don't know if there is anything else you could call it.
pool #1908 - Got nothing (that is not 3 sentences long).
pool #1388 - Extreme firepower?
pool #1350 - Got nothing.
pool #2486 - Got nothing.
pool #2403 - Body writing.
pool #1399 - Yukari using portals in clever ways.
pool #2553 - Acts that defy logic.
pool #2246 - Panty exposure resulting in embarrassment.
pool #1340 - There is no correlation to the description. "Post sex" would fit just as well.
pool #1823 - Got nothing.
pool #2350 - Got nothing.
pool #2172 - Being verbally abused by the character.

All the ones I have specific comments about I'm referencing below; the ones left in the quote I agree with more or less and wouldn't really mind them being renamed.

These are very well-known memes, and pretty damn obvious. They're also not trying to be clever, which is the real problem in pool names.

  • pool #1048 - "It's dangerous to go alone! Take this."

This is also a meme, and mostly a parody of a specific image. Should perhaps be turned into a tag.

It's very obvious. The latter perhaps a bit less, but you're guaranteed not to need to look at the description more than once.

Also about as self-descriptive as you can get in a short sentence.

Okay, what? How could it possibly be unclear to anyone? And how would you make it clearer?

These are fairly good, and it's unclear to me you could make them much better.

This one is perfectly descriptive; the only problem is that it clashes with trap.

Terrible. Needs renaming ASAP.

I think it'd be good to clean the names up a little; I almost suspect people are starting pools just because they thought up a clever name for one. I don't even know where this "pools should have a clever name" idea came from.
It would also discourage using pools as a particularly obnoxious way to add worthless comments.

pool #1246 - "Nice Knowing You"
pool #1561 - "Told You Not To Do That"
Honestly I think these are just comment pools. Does anyone actually browse or search these?

pool #591 - "Lipstick"
This was suggested as taggable in forum #53019.

pool #1908 - "What has science done?!?"
A problem with this pool is that it doesn't seem to have a clear theme, probably as a direct result of the bad naming. What does post #679683 and post #599785 have in common?
Beyond that it looks like mostly a bunch of fusions.

pool #2486 - "It's a trap!"
Much the same. These posts all seem very different.

pool #1388 - "More Dakka!!"
I assume some degree of overkill or heavy firepower was intended here, but a bunch of the posts here are just someone firing a gun.

pool #2403 - "Watch Your Language"
Horrible name, dubious value.

What about GARthering (pool #2194) can do a serious changing in the description, since I go lazy to put some good description to that pool and I was all out of good ideas.

Or if necessary just change the whole name of it, the description I put seems doesn't match the name, so I think it may use some changing to the name or to the descriptions.

I believe these kinds of pools work like forum threads.
Users find common interests while commenting (usually after pulling out some fitting trope that becomes the pool's title) and make pools so they can gather around that.
Unless your questions was "does anyone actually browse these beside the users commenting?", they seem pretty popular to me.

pool #1048 - "It's dangerous to go alone! Take this."
Cases like this have always made me believe that tags were sometimes kept pools when giving them a short and intuitive name was impossible (except a_master_is_out, somehow).
And I don't really see anything better for these two.

Suggestions that came to mind:
pool #2005 - Something like "Extremist Mundanity"?
pool #1388 - "Portable Armoury", "Kitchen Sink of Weaponry" ("Pile 'o Gunz" if we'z feelin' Orky).
pool #1888 - "Down-range", "Target POV", ("Clay Pigeon's Daring Escape" isn't a serious suggestion, but it amused me)... or maybe it should be a tag; aimed_at or something

Sometimes, yeah. They can have some good humour value. ...How much do those two overlap?
