We still need a tag to distinguish the original series before implicating, as I've already pointed out in forum #46256.

In that case, may I suggest the original series being tagged yuu-gi-ou_duel_monsters and the yuu-gi-ou tag being used as an umbrella?
The anime is not officially called "Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel Monsters", is it?
Wikipedia uses the page title "Yu-Gi-Oh! (1998 TV series)" and says that the Japanese title is simply 遊☆戯☆王.
Assuming this is all correct and reliable, I suggest using, for the classic series:
- or -
Compare: rockman_(classic)

Actually, it is. The 1998 TV series refers to an earlier Yuu-gi-ou series that was only 27 episodes long. The Yuu-gi-ou most people are familiar with is the 2000 series that had five seasons. If you check its Wikipedia page, it says that it's known in Japan as Yuu-gi-ou: Duel Monsters to set it apart from the earlier series.
We could also create yuu-gi-ou_(series) to be an umbrella tag and continue using yuu-gi-ou for the 2000 show, the same way that we have aquarion_(series) and eureka_seven_(series).
I'm thinkin' we should go with yuu-gi-ou_duel_monsters (with the standard aliases, including exclamations and colons), based on NAS's text rendering of the title, 遊戯王デュエルモンスターズ.
As for the first anime and the series as a whole, in this case it would probably be better to leave the series as yuu-gi-ou and qualify the lesser-known anime (which I definitely want a tag for, considering distinctive posts such as post #1030729).
I'll go ahead and start adding yuu-gi-ou_duel_monsters to posts, then. If we decide to use another tag later on, we can always alias it.
Edit: All right, I think I'm done. I also made tags for the 1998 Yuu-gi-ou series and the second Yuu-gi-ou movie: yuu-gi-ou_(toei) and gekijouban_yuu-gi-ou:_chou-yuugou_toki_wo_koeta_kizuna.
Please go through with the implications Danielx21 listed, as well as these:
create implication yuu-gi-ou_duel_monsters -> yuu-gi-ou
create implication yuu-gi-ou_(toei) -> yuu-gi-ou
create implication gekijouban_yuu-gi-ou:_chou-yuugou_toki_wo_koeta_kizuna -> yuu-gi-ou
create implication yuu-gi-ou_r -> yuu-gi-ou
create implication yuu-gi-ou_gx_tag_force -> yuu-gi-ou
I think that's everything!
